What people ask me most.

What people ask me most about myself, how I invest, the startups I back and the portfolio companies. Tap a question to read the answer.

i. About Alejo 02 — questions
Definition

I invest in companies that make an impact on hospitality. Today I invest in four (development and capital, operations, concept and design, and rest) and mentor three more (supply, hotel staffing and student housing). I'm Creative and Innovation Director at Macca and Blackroom.

If you have a company that solves something for the industry, this is where you introduce it to me. If you want to come in as an investor in one of my companies, this is the place too. In some of them I have partners.

Geography

I'm in Medellín, Colombia. Blackroom, the operator, works in Colombia and Central America, with hotels of 40 to 100 rooms.

The other companies go wherever there's a project: supply and consulting travel more easily than a construction site.

ii. Investing with me 02 — questions
Equity

Yes, and it's discussed case by case. Each company has its moment: some are closed, others are open to partners, and sometimes what I'm looking for is someone to build a new one with me.

I don't publish rounds or terms on the site: that's a conversation.

Model

No. There's no fund, no committee and no quarterly mandate. It's my own capital, and I make the decisions.

That's why I invest in few companies and get deeply involved in the ones I choose.

iii. For startups 02 — questions
Criteria

The ones that solve something real in hospitality and that I can test in my own hotels. If your product works for me, it will probably work for other operators.

It doesn't have to be technology. In fact, almost nothing I do is.

Present my company
Process

A person reads it, not an automatic filter. If there's something there, I reply to talk; if not, I reply too. I'd rather give a clear no than stay silent.

iv. About the portfolio 02 — questions
Portfolio

Today I invest in four and mentor three. Each one covers a different layer of a hotel's life cycle: capital and development, operations, concept and design, and rest. The three in mentorship add supply, hotel staffing and student housing.

More are on the way. They join the site once they stop being an idea and start moving.

Structure

Not all of them. In some I'm the owner and in others a partner. What they share is that I'm inside: none of them is an investment I watch from a distance.
